5 Amazing Home Remedies for Dry Hair

5 Amazing Home Remedies for Dry Hair

Dry, unmanageable and unconditioned hair

is not a pretty sight and can lead to a lot of problems. Not only does this hair type lack lustre and shine, but is also prone to hair fall issues

. I have come across many people, both men and women, who use everything and just about anything to try and tame their hair

in an effort to make them shiny, soft and manageable. If only it was that simple!

There is no doubt whatsoever that dry hair is genetic, but it could also be the result of unhealthy lifestyle habits, which include food and drinks, sleeping hours, stress levels and exercise routine, and above all, your hair care regime. And by this, I do not mean just shampooing your hair.

Hair care means taking care of your hair right from shampooing and conditioning to oiling it regularly, using the right oil, natural hair masks, hair nourishers, tonics and also following a healthy diet. The hair care regime has to be a part of your weekly, if not bi weekly, routine.

Here are some home remedies to take care of dry hair –

1. Regular Oiling

I would suggest that those with dry hair problem should oil their hair at least twice a week and leave it on for at least two hours. Not only does it help condition the hair but provides nourishment as well, making it soft and promoting hair growth. A good quality Mahabhringraj or Brahmi Amla oil is recommended. Or else a good quality sesame seed oil mixed with equal quantities of almond and castor oil. Use turban therapy to allow the oil to seep into the roots.

2. Avocado Hair Mask

You can use the following natural hair mask after oiling your hair, which will nourish it –

1 mashed avocado

2tsp honey

2tsp triphala powder

2 eggs, beaten

Method: Mix all the ingredients well and apply all over your hair. Cover with a shower cap for at least 45 minutes. Wash with a mild herbal shampoo.

3. Rose Hair Mask

Rose petals are known for their incredible properties for both skin and hair. Combine them with two other power ingredients – almond oil and eggs, and they can work wonders. Use –

2 eggs, beaten

1/2 cup fresh rose petal paste

4 tsp almond oil

Method: Mix all the ingredients together and apply all over the hair and scalp and leave in for about 45 minutes. Wash with a mild shampoo.

4. Natural Hair Rinse

If you are among those who don’t have the time for carrying out elaborate hair care regimes, why not make some natural hair rinses to use after shampooing and conditioning? Here’s how –

Take 200ml distilled water or spring water and add 2 tsp honey. Use this as an after shampoo rinse.

You can also boil 10 Marigold flowers in 1 litre of water. Let this steep for 1 hour and add 1 tsp olive oil. Strain and use as an after shampoo rinse for your hair. Not only will your hair feel softer but more manageable as well.

5. Flowery and Fruity Hair Pack

Flower and fruit extracts have always had a special place in my treasure trove of beauty recipes, both for the skin and hair. This recipe is a real treat. I use it regularly and also have shared it with some of my Bollywood clients whose hair goes through a lot of turmoil and stress with the constant drying and hairstyling.

1 cup marigold and rose paste

10 hibiscus flower paste

10 hibiscus leaves

5 bay leaves

1 mashed banana

4 tsb olive oil

1 egg

1 tsp ghee or clarified butter

Method: Mix all the ingredients well and apply on your hair. Leave in for 1 hour with a shower cap and then steam your hair. This will help the ingredients soak into the roots and strengthen them. Shampoo after 1 hour.

With all these wonderful natural recipes your hair will gradually transform from dry and stressed to soft and smooth. Imbibe them into your daily lifestyle and see the magic in your tresses.

4 Natural Ways to Make Your Hair Grow Thick

One of the most fun things about our body is our hair. We can experiment with it however we want to.
I, personally, mark the end of a phase, be it a bad phase or a good one, by changing my look, in which my hair plays a huge part, obviously. So, how can we be alright with our hair not being the way we want it to be which is smooth, silky, and thick? We don’t want our prized tassels to be scraggly and dull, but then, with all the playing and experimenting, these things are bound to happen.

What causes hair thinning?

4 Natural Ways to Make Your Hair Grow Thick
1. Excessive physical or mental stress: Physical stress due to a surgery or engaging in tiring activities, or even flu can cause temporary hair loss. This can trigger a type of hair loss called telogen effluvium. Stressful events can disturb the hair cycle pushing more hair than usual into the shedding phase.

2. Lack of protein: When our mothers ask us to eat a lot of green vegetables and eggs, they have a reason behind it. In addition to a lot of other things, protein deficiency also causes hair loss. This is because our body tries to make up for the deficiency by rationing protein by stopping hair growth.

3. Heredity: If you have a family history of hair thinning or baldness, you may be prone to it.

4. Hormonal changes in females:

Just as pregnancy causes hair loss due to excessive stress and hormonal changes, so can switching between or going off birth control pills. This is because these things cause a lot of hormonal imbalance in the body.

5. Anaemia: Iron deficiency, which is something majority of women suffer from, can also lead to a lot of hair loss which is one of the most common symptoms of anaemia,

6. Over-styling:

Styling your hair too much can also cause hair loss because its is being put through too much stress. Exposing your hair to too much heat and chemicals can also make it weaker, as it affects the roots.

The good news is that just a little bit of nourishment and a little bit of care can make them all glossy and thick like you’ve always wanted them to be. There are so many natural remedies to stimulate hair growth and increase the volume of your hair. Here’s how to make your hair thick by using simple home remedies.

1. Eggs

Since protein deficiency is one of the main reasons for hair thinning, it shouldn’t be a surprise that eggs, a great source of protein, will help you undo the damage. Protein is the best nutrient to give your hair the strength to grow in volume and in length. To use egg on your hair, beat two eggs so that they are properly whisked together. Apply this mixture on dry hair and let it stay for about half an hour. Not only will this help in the long run, but it will also make your hair soft and silky instantly.

2. Coconut Oil

Our grandmothers and mothers have been pestering us to apply coconut oil on our hair at least once weekly, and that can’t be because of no reason, right? Coconut oil is the best product to maintain the texture and shine of your hair. Coconut oil also has the necessary proteins to keep the hair strong. To use coconut oil for getting thicker hair naturally, massage a bit of warm coconut oil into the scalp and hair and cover it with a hot towel for 10 to 15 minutes. This will ensure that the oil stays heated while penetrating the hair shaft.

3. Olive Oil

Olive oil has everything that our hair needs to stay healthy and thick. This is because of the omega-3 fatty acids

it contains which make it easier for the hair to become thicker and more voluminous. To use olive oil, simply apply the oil to your hair and massage it over your scalp. Leave it on for thirty minutes and then rinse with a light shampoo.

4. Castor oil

Castor oil has high amounts of Vitamin E and fatty acids which promote hair growth, and due to its high viscosity, it coats the hair thoroughly. Apply castor oil on your hair just as you would apply coconut oil for best results.

castor oil

In addition to these natural remedies, there are various ways in which you can protect your hair from losing its health. For instance, don’t over-wash. Washing them too often can dry out your hair. The less you wash, the more hydrated your hair will be, and more hydration means better health. And, if it is necessary for you to wash your hair often, then consider using sulfate-free products as they have lesser harsh chemicals which affect the roots of the hair.

Top Uses of Hydrogen Peroxide for Skin, Teeth, Hair and Ears

Hydrogen peroxide has a long standing reputation of being the only germicidal agent composed of oxygen and water, which has innumerable uses and benefits. It acts as a cleansing agent and a disinfectant, and is easily available for cleaning purposes. It also makes a brilliant substitute for bleach. Considered as one of the safest and effective natural sanitisers, the type of hydrogen peroxide that is available in grocery stores is usually a three percent concentration, while the remaining percentage is water. But did you know it is also used for various beauty regimes including hair, skin, teeth and ears? We are to tell you some of its amazing uses for various beautyregimes that you might want to consider some time soon.

Uses of Hydrogen Peroxide:

Top Uses of Hydrogen Peroxide for Skin, Teeth, Hair and Ears

1. Hydrogen Peroxide for Skin

Depending on your skin, dry or oily, you can see if it suits your type, otherwise it may cause unnecessary irritation and sting. Hydrogen peroxide is majorly used for skin lightening and acne. It also acts as a disinfectant and antiseptic for the skin to prevent any infection caused by minor cuts, bruises or burns. It works by releasing oxygen on the affected area. The release of oxygen causes foaming that helps to remove the dead skin cells and clean the area, hence clearing acne scars. According to beauty expert Shantanu Jha, CEO, Zooty Beauty App, hydrogen peroxide eliminates skin discoloration, age spots, blemishes and scars. If used with necessary precautions, the chemical can prove to be wonderful, especially in procuring a lighter skin tone.

2. Hydrogen Peroxide for Hair

It is generally used for hair lightening as it consists of bleaching agents. Shantanu says, “Hydrogen peroxide will take care of any free radicals or germs in your hair, but not without taking your hair’s natural oils with them. Therefore, it is advisable to use it every six weeks and after use, ensure to take deep conditioning treatments to retain the natural shine of your hair. A mix of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide should lift the colour of your strands and the mixture will also dilute the harmful effects of hydrogen peroxide.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide for Teeth

Hydrogen peroxide improves your oral health and helps maintain oral hygiene. and bring about teeth whitening. Rinse your mouth with diluted form of H2O2 and make sure you do not ingest it as it may cause harm. H2O2, being highly reactive in nature, can pass through your tooth’s enamel and react with the dentin (tissue layer of the enamel) and the pulp part of your teeth as a result of its overuse.

4. Hydrogen Peroxide for Ears

Hydrogen peroxide is used for removing earwax. Earwax is the outer part of the ear that prevents dust or any other particle from entering the ear, further preventing severe infections. However, excess wax accumulation can lead to discomfort and itching in the ear. Hydrogen peroxide is the best way to remove earwax. Do not use this treatment in case of any perforation in the internal parts of the ear.

5. Hydrogen Peroxide for Nails

As per Shantanu, H2O2 is known to lighten yellow nails and bring them back to their natural, healthy state. Simply rub a soaked cotton ball over your nails and see the difference. It also helps in preventing any formation of nail fungus. Hydrogen peroxide uses the oxidative therapy, destroying the fungus formed on the nails by increasing the oxygen levels.

6. Hydrogen Peroxide for Feet

As you soak your feet in hydrogen peroxide with water, it helps in softening calluses and cracked heels. If you have any foot fungus, H2O2 can easily help in getting rid of it. Do remember, not to use the solution while you have an open wound as it may cause burning sensation and irritation on the skin.

Cautions

Hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidiser and is used abundantly. However, it shouldn’t be ingested by any means. It can be a skin and eye irritant if you are allergic to it. Overuse of anything is bad for your health; similarly, excess usage of hydrogen peroxide is bad and may put your health at risk. According to Shantanu, regular usage can result in killing your skin cells, making it dry, rough and flaky. Therefore, it is recommended to first refer to your beauty expert or skin specialist before applying it anywhere to avoid side effects.

How to Use Honey for Hair: The Nutrient Packed Ingredient to Treat Dullness

In today’s fast pace, in order to be at the top of the ladder, we often tend to ignore our health and wellness. Pollution levels are only getting worse every year, especially in metropolitan cities like Delhi, where we recently experienced one of the densest smogs(fog combined with smoke) ever! Our hair needs moisture and the right nutrients in order to remain long, strong and shiny but the dryness and pollutants make it dull and weak, which causes severe hair loss and hair thinness. Pollution isn’t the only cause of weak hair, we follow every new hair trend that pops up on our feed and get swayed away by it without actually considering whether that trend is suitable for us or is it just another temporary fad that will fade soon.

How to Use Honey for Hair: The Nutrient Packed Ingredient to Treat Dullness

We subject our hair to harsh procedures like rebonding, smoothening and colouring, which induce very strong chemicals into our hair. In fact, regular hair blowing and straightening damage our hair in many ways. Even shampoos are not suitable to regain those lustrous tresses back because most shampoos contain sulphate, which weakens the hair more.

So What Should You Use?

Natural remedies are most apt for your hair as they infuse natural nutrients needed by the hair and also come with no side effects. We have come across a lot of ‘nani ke nuske’ (grandma’s age-old tips and tricks) wherein we are told to use yoghurt, eggs and so on to get beautiful hair. One such ingredient that is known to help your hair is honey.

Yes, honey does not just suffice that sweet tooth or bloated tummy, but also works wonders for your hair. Honey is an emollient, which basically means that it does not allow the moisture to fade away from your hair. Instead it retains moisture to give that soft and a smooth texture to the hair whilst making it look shiny and healthy. Honey is also rich in antioxidant properties, which enables it to reduce hair breakage, hair loss and keeps your hair strong and healthy. It also contains anti-bacterial properties, which prevents scalp infections that can leave the scalp feeling itchy, red and swollen, and effect hair growth.

honey

All these properties present in honey make it a must-have ingredient in all our masks and hair spa procedures. So ditch the chemicals and resort to natural treatments like honey, which provides so many benefits while being gentle on the hair and scalp.

How Do We Use Honey on Our Hair?

DIYs (do it yourself) masks are an easy and doable option. You need not invest in shampoos with honey instead you can make home-made honey masks in a jiffy that will deliver the same outcome. Let’s look at two very easy honey masks –

1. Honey Yoghurt Hair Mask

Yoghurt nourishes hair with a very essential nutrient that is protein, while honey gives your hair that shiny and soft texture. This works well for dry and dull hair and is believed to reduce hair loss.

Ingredients:

2 Tbsp honey

4 Tbsp yoghurt

Method:

Mix honey and yoghurt well, then use an applicator brush or your hands and massage it well on the scalp and make sure to cover every possible area, even the hair tips. Cover your hair with a towel and leave this mask on for about 30 minutes, then just simply rinse your hair properly. Let your hair air dry, avoid using blow dryers or any other heated hair styling tool.

2. Honey Egg Hair Mask

honey hair maskHoney Oil and Egg Hair Mask; Photo credit: facebook/ Lisa’s Kiss My Legs

Egg is rich in proteins and vitamins that are essential for the hair. This is the reason why egg is regarded as one of the best hair masks, while honey helps in softening the hair and giving it shine.

Ingredients:

2 1/2 Tbsp coconut oil or olive oil

3 Tbsp honey (preferably organic)

2 eggs

Method:

Beat the eggs and the oil together, then slowly add honey and mix well. Keep your hair covered with a towel or a shower cap for about 60 minutes and then rinse your hair with any shampoo that will get rid of the egg smell or any excess oil from your hair, leaving you with extremely soft, shiny and strong tresses.

Go ahead, give yourself a day off and pamper yourself to a relaxing spa at home to help your hair regain all the lost shine and moisture.
