According to Nutritionist Lokendra Tomar from Weight Loss Clinic, “Green tea does help in weight loss. In many scientific studies it has been found that green tea increases fat burning and boost the metabolic rate as much as 17%. Stress is one of the major causative factors in obesity. Green tea also contains an active ingredient known as Theanine. Theanine is a type of amino acid, which helps in reducing stress by providing calming and relaxing effect on brain without sedation. This helps in losing weight easily.”

1. It is calorie free


According to expert Nutritionist Dr. Rupali Dutta, “Green tea is consumed with hot water and is sugarless. Hence, it is a calorie-free drink. Having 2-3 cups of this concoction won’t really affect your calorie intake for the day.


2. Helps you manage hunger pangs


According to Dr. Dutta, if you feel hungry, green tea is the best drink to manage hunger pangs at odd hours. It is just like drinking water, the more you drink the fuller you feel. One cup of green tea will stop you from binge eating unnecessarily.


3. It has numerous antioxidants


Green tea is trove of antioxidants that promote health. These antioxidants may help in boosting metabolism and keep the digestion process strong. The polyphenols present in the tea help detoxify the body too.


4. It has Catechins


Catechins are one of the antioxidants present in green tea which are believed to boost metabolism, further promoting weight loss.

With Indian consumers getting more aware and conscious of healthy eating, consumption of green tea, gluten-free products or super foods has seen a rise. Matcha, a green tea from Japan, is an ingredient being innovatively used in ice creams, cupcakes and doughnuts.

For the uninitiated, Matcha is a finely ground green tea. In ancient Japan, monks primarily consumed it as a beverage of choice. Now it can either be dissolved in milk or water to add to its versatility — and also for its health benefits.

“Apart from health benefits like improving moods, memory and concentration, helping you relax, aiding in weight loss, matcha has taken a diverse transformation into the culinary world with people being more conscious about what they eat,” Chef Himanshu Taneja, Director of Culinary at The St. Regis Mumbai, told IANS.

“Adding matcha in food from a simple Frappuccino and turning it into a green tea Frappuccino, to adding matcha in our desserts like matcha cheesecake or a matcha ice cream, the ingredient is versatile and helps add to the health quotient,” he added.

Experts say eating healthy and staying fit has become an area of focus for people across all age groups, and they are increasingly looking at a variety of options that contribute to that lifestyle.

Given that Matcha is high in antioxidants, enhances calmness, boosts memory and concentration, increases energy levels and endurance, helps to burn calories and detoxifies the human body, improve cholesterol levels and more, it is fast making its way as an ingredient of significance.

Chef Rahis Khan of Delhi’s Metropolitan Hotel and Spa says matcha nowadays is used to add flavour to a variety of Western-style confectionery items including chocolates, cakes, candies, cookies and green tea ice creams as it is the only tea in which the entire tea leaf is dissolved in water to provide the maximum benefits of its components.

“We, at (the hotel’s) Sakura (restaurant) serve matcha ice cream. Also, matcha-based drinks have been introduced such as smoothies, lattes, milkshakes and also alcoholic beverages,” Khan told IANS.

Foodhall, a premium lifestyle food destination by the Future Group, is also experimenting a lot with matcha. It has started a matcha experience zone that has flavoured macarons, iced tea latte, cupcake, cookies, baklavas, eclairs and doughnuts.

“I think with more places experimenting with matcha as an ingredient, people have become more open to adding it and experimenting with such dishes,” Olivier Vincenot, Corporate Chef at Foodhall, told IANS.

The combination of flavour and nutrition that it provides is interesting, says Smritika Sharma, Marketing Head at beverage brand RAW Pressery.

“Matcha is stronger as compared to other green teas, even when compared on caffeine levels. One must lower quantities right before bed time. Packed with catechins, matcha is an ideal pre-workout beverage. It boosts thermogenesis by 8 to 10 percent and hence improves fat burn.

“Matcha in cosmetics or through homemade masks is great for the skin. The chlorophyll present in the leaves acts as a powerful detoxifier which stimulates skin cells. Matcha, when applied topically, is also known to reduce sebum production and therefore is great for acne,” Sharma told IANS.

This Everyday Drink Can Help You Lose Weight

Coffee fans don’t need another reason to keep drinking java on the regular (guilty as charged), but those who tend to stay away from it because of health scares do—and the reason to switch might finally be here. A new book, The Coffee Lover’s Diet: Change Your Coffee, Change Your Life written by Bob Arnot, MD, says that drinking a cup of joe (or three) a day doesn’t only carry eye-opening benefits in the morning, but it can also aid in your diet and weight-loss goals, too.

On a recent Good Morning America (GMA) segment, Dr. Arnot explained how coffee is a dieter’s secret weapon, as it works to jumpstart weight loss, and recommends adding several cups of coffee to a balanced, low-calorie diet. “It’s going to increase your metabolism a little bit,” he says of the coffee consumption, explaining that you’ll burn around a hundred calories from the caffeine, and that it also improves the intensity that you can exercise at. Another benefit Dr. Arnot says you can expect when drinking more java: a mood boost. “You’re just going to feel great when you’re losing weight.” But, before you think that a sugar-loaded coffee Frappuccino will do the trick here, Dr. Arnot is talking about black coffee—no cream or sugar allowed.

However, this “diet” is not right for everyone, as Dr. Arnot says that you should absolutely be aware of your caffeine levels and what you can tolerate. Dr. Jennifer Ashton, ABC’s senior medical contributor, echoes this point, explaining that if you’re not careful, coffee can raise your heart rate or blood pressure, and lead to dehydration, tremors and insomnia in some drinkers. So, if drinking coffee makes you stressed, anxious or boosts your heart rate too much, switch to decaf—which Dr. Ashton says isn’t actually free of caffeine (it contains 0-7 milligrams per serving) or stop drinking it entirely.

If your body is comfortable with caffeine consumption and there are results that have proven more coffee paired with a balanced diet can lead to weight loss, what’s the harm in trying it out for yourself? Want to be healthy and live longer? Drink a cup of coffee a day

Drinking coffee is good for you. In fact, it can lead to a longer life, according to a new study reported by US researchers at the University of Southern California (USC). In a study of more than 1,80,000 participants, the researchers found that people who drank regular or decaffeinated coffee experienced health benefits, such as increased longevity. Previous research had shown that coffee can lower the risk of several diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, liver cirrhosis and Parkinson’s and can reduce chemicals in the blood that can trigger heart disease.

The researchers report in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine that people who consumed a cup of coffee a day were 12% less likely to die earlier compared to those who didn’t drink coffee. This association was even stronger for those who drank two to three cups a day — 18% reduced chance of death.

Lower mortality was present regardless of whether people drank regular or decaffeinated coffee, suggesting the association is not tied to caffeine. Drinking coffee was also found to be associated with a lower risk of death due to heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory and kidney disease. The study participants were followed up on the average for 16 years.


Claimed to be the largest of its kind, the study had ethnically diverse participants who included African-Americans, Japanese-Americans, Latinos and whites. “Such investigations are important because lifestyle patterns and disease risks can vary substantially across racial and ethnic backgrounds, and findings in one group may not necessarily apply to others.”

Since the association (between coffee drinking and longer life) was seen in four different ethnicities, it is safe to say the results apply to other groups, the authors claim. “Seeing a similar pattern across four different populations gives stronger biological backing to the argument that coffee is good for you whether you are white, African-American, Latino or Asian.” According to the authors, although this study does not show what chemicals in coffee may have this beneficial effect, it is clear that coffee “can be incorporated into a healthy diet and lifestyle”.

Drink Mineral Water to Get Calcium, Suggests Study

A new study, conducted by a team of researchers at Leibniz University Hannover in Germany, suggests that drinking mineral water can be a good way to get calcium along with milk and other dairy products.  In fact, the study claims that mineral water can be a good low-calorie alternative to drinking milk or taking supplements fulfil your body’s daily calcium requirement. The study has been published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

Researchers examined how well the body can absorb calcium from five different products, each containing 300 mg of calcium, including three types of calcium-rich mineral water, milk and a calcium supplement. 21 men and women participated in the study which showed that there was no difference in how calcium from the five different sources was absorbed. Moreover, it was seen that the presence of other minerals in water did not have any effect on calcium absorption.

According to Theresa Greupner of Leibniz University Hannover, “The special feature of mineral water as a source of calcium is as a calorie-free alternative to milk and dairy products. In a world with a steadily growing number of overweight and obese people it is important to reduce the energy intake and to promote alternatives to satisfy the calcium demand apart from high caloric milk and dairy products.” The mineral content of water can be determined by reading the label.



Weight Management Expert Dr. Gargi Sharma tells us, “Your body can derive calcium from two sources: what your eat or from your bones. When food fails to meet your requirements of calcium, it is derived from the bones which can weaken them. Some of the good sources of calcium, other than dairy products, can be broccoli, ragi, figs and almonds.”

According to the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) developed by the Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) at the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, men between the age of 19 and 70 years require 1000 mg of calcium every day whereas men aged 70 years and above require 1200 mg per day. In case of women, those aged between 19 and 50 years require 1000 mg daily whereas those above 50 years will need more which is about 1200 mg per day.
