5 Superb Beauty Remedies for the Wedding Season

5 Superb Beauty Remedies for the Wedding Season

Weddings mean festivity, and festivity means celebration. So the great Indian wedding is all about celebration and the madness that comes along with it. In all this chaos, one has to stay focused, balanced and multi task with everything and everyone – friends, relatives, colleagues and guests.

Most Indian weddings start September onward. In fact, it’s almost as if we have an additional season to our annual cycle and that is the wedding season. A hectic flurry of activities never seem to end from venue selection, decorations, outfits, jewellery, grooming, gifts, catering, guest lists, pandits, themes, mehendi… and the list goes on. Stress levels are at its prime too, in anticipation of that perfect Indian wedding.

I believe that if you are about to get married, you need to plan in advance and work towards tying up everything well before time. This way you’ll be able to enjoy your wedding too.

Simple Tips to Keep in Mind

To look good and get that natural glow, you need to eat healthy and keep your skin well looked after at least six weeks before “D day”. Yes, your diet plays a crucial role and you mustn’t neglect it. Here are a few tips –

– Be conscientious about your liquid intake. Avoid alcohol and increase natural drinks like water, chaachlassi, fresh fruit juices and nimbu pani.

– Add at least five pieces of fruits daily to your diet and that does not mean a bit of each but a whole piece – 1 full apple, 1 full orange, 1 bowl of pomegranate, 1 bowl of papaya, etc.

– Lots of salads and freshly made soups are highly recommended.

– I commonly find to-be-brides and grooms suffering from dark circles. It is inevitable due to stress, chaotic lifestyle, hectic schedules and late nights. But it is a must to relax and sleep on time (it is not without reason that we call it ‘beauty sleep’), as well as take out “me time” for a little pampering.

– Exercise regularly to help improve blood circulation, tone up the body, get rid of those extra kilos and prevent a sluggish looking skin.

– I would even suggest practicing meditation to calm the nerves and relax the wound up mind which very often buzzes with a million thoughts at this time. You can start with just 5 minutes a day and you will see the difference.

Milk Bath, the Centuries-Old Beauty Ritual for Gorgeous Skin

We have all heard that the Egyptian queen Cleopatra was known for her beauty across various kingdoms. Her beauty rituals were said to have been an elaborate affair with exotic scrubs, face packs, hair masks and what not, and one of the most famous rituals from the lot being the milk bath. Having a milk bath can be one of the most wonderful, invigorating, sensuous and rejuvenating experiences of your life. Not only does it make you feel good with all the pampering, but nourish and detan your skin, leaving you feeling feather soft and silky all over. Milk is touted to contain a host of beauty benefits, being an excellent ingredient for the skin.

Milk is a common household ingredient, and if you can get hold of full cream milk, it’s all the more better. Here’s my version of the ultimate milk bath experience and I promise you that once you start bathing like this at least once a month, you’ll look forward to it every time. It is important to pamper yourself once in a while to nourish your body and also feel good from within.

Milk Bath, the Centuries-Old Beauty Ritual for Gorgeous Skin

Anything that is luxurious also needs to be well planned so that it is picture perfect. You should gear up in advance as it’s not just the ingredients that go into this bath that make it special to me (as it will to you too) but also the things one can very easily put together to make it the ultimate bathing experience.

Almond oil
Some bubble bath, preferably a herbal one
A back brush or loofah
2 large bath towels
Some aromatic candles
Soothing music
Maybe a glass of wine or champagne

How to Go About

1. First things first; switch off your phone and keep it far away. Trust me, you don’t want any distraction.

2. Now run your hot water in a tub and add warm milk to it. Then add the bubble bath, essential oil of your choice and the flower petals.

3. Clean your face with almond oil and massage your face gently. Once you are in your steamy tub, this will soak into the skin and give it a natural shine.

4. Switch on the music, light the candles and soak yourself in pure luxury! Sip on the wine, relax and listen to the music and enjoy the luxuriating silkiness of milk on your skin. Once you have soaked yourself for a good 20 to 30 minutes, you will feel relaxed, the stress melting away.

5. Take some sea salt and scrub gently into the skin all over your body. This will help draw out toxins, dislodge dead skin and make you super soft all over.

6. Rinse your body well and avoid using any synthetic soaps. In fact the best time to have a bath is in the evening as after this invigorating bath you will sleep sounder and better.

If you are one of those people, like me, who want to block out the world even if it is just for a while, believe me the bathroom is the best place to do so. This haven of peace and tranquillity is a super spa experience that you can create at home. The best part is that it can be done any time with some careful planning and your own innovations. Try it as soon as possible and I promise you there will be no looking back!

Coconut Oil for Stretch Marks: 5 Beauty Remedies That Work Wonders

In today’s day and age, everyone wants to be perfect with the ideal body structure, sharp features and flawless skin. Nothing much can be done about the first two as they depend on one’s genes, but the latter can be worked towards. Stretch marks

, also known as striae distensae, are long, depressed bands on the skin that appear as either red, purple or silvery white, depending on skin colour. They are dermal scars or disfiguring lesions that tend to occur near the hips, buttocks, thighs, armpits, stomach, chest, etc. They can be found in both men and women, but more commonly affect women, almost up to 40-90% of women.

According to Dr. Jangid, a senior dermatologist at SkinQure, New Delhi, “Stretch marks are formed due to the incapability of the lower skin (dermis) to stretch as much as the upper skin. During pregnancy or bodybuilding, the skin is stretched as the body grows. But after pregnancy or when an individual stops working out, the body regains its previous size. The skin isn’t able to go back to its original size and leaves stretch marks behind. It doesn’t just affect the superficial skin, but also the deeper dermis. To get rid of the scars, both the layers of the skin need to be treated.”

Causes of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks appear due to large amounts of cortisone present in the skin. The elastic fibres in the dermis are weakened by cortisone. Due to the constant stretching of the skin, the layer tears which causes a mark to form in the middle layer of the skin. There are a number of reasons for the stretching of the skin like pregnancy, dramatic weight loss

or gain, having a family history

of stretch marks, using corticosteroid medication, etc. During adolescence, teenagers undergo a growth spurt which may cause the marks. Genetic disorders

like Cushing’s Syndrome or Marfan Syndrome increase the likelihood of developing stretch marks.

Dr. Deepali Bhardwaj, a trained dermatologist and laser surgeon, states, “Stretch marks are formed due to the breaking of collagen fibres ,which happens when the body suddenly bloats with fat or with a child inside. Even steroids can be a cause for stretch marks; athletes and fitness freaks may misuse them and cause the formation of scars due to the sudden bulk up of muscles.”

How to Prevent Stretch Marks

In recent times, several methods have been introduced to help fade away or completely remove these marks like medical procedures and prescriptions. But home remedies

are the safest and most effective. “The application of essential fatty acid oils and coconut oils

can be effective if they are applied at the time of the formation of the marks. Initially they are pink, then red, soon they become yellow and finally white. The trick is to catch them young, when they are pink or red, and prevent them for damaging the skin any further,” says Dr. Bhardwaj.

Coconut oil is used to dull the scars and has proven to be quite useful. It has great moisturising properties and improves the overall health of the skin. It’s anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory

, anti-viral and anti-microbial qualities get absorbed by the skin and heal it. The irritation caused during pregnancy can be reduced by the application of the oil. It nourishes the damaged skin and strengthens its cell walls. Coconut oil contains vitamins like Vitamin E, which heals the dermis, and Vitamin K that removes the damaged and dead cells.

Glow, shine and go all natural with organic beauty products

Most of the Indians are striving to live a healthier lifestyle by consuming nutrient-rich food, exercising regularly or by using organic products for their good skin and health. Just the way our body needs good amount of vitamins to feel and look fit, the same way our skin needs to be feed with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids and fatty acids to look young and fresh. We all need to restore our skin’s natural PH balance for an ideal looking skin.

The concept of organic beauty products started from Edwardian Era, where the Edwardian ladies were pressurised to look beautiful and wanted keep wrinkles at bay. Just like the women today, even Edwardian ladies used to go for natural remedies for their skin such as concoctions and creams with Cocoa Butter, Almond Oil, Witch Hazel and Lanolin. The organic products somewhere washed off when big brands came up with beauty and skin care products with chemicals in it which was harassing the skin and also giving wrinkles to women at a very young age.

Guardian 20 spoke to Dr Blossom Kochhar, Chairperson, Blossom Kochhar Group of Companies and she said, “Everyone is shifting more to natural and organic products because the consumer is becoming more aware of the bad effects of chemicals on themselves and the environment.”

Indian women are known for make-up and using skin care products unlike western women. Organic products are now emerging in India at a large scale and many of the brands and Indian women are shifting from chemical based products to organic or natural products. The main reason being of the shift is that chemical based beauty products have a bad effect on the skin. When these chemical products are applied on the skin, they go through the bloodstream and the cells of the skin, which reacts and give rashes or pimples to the skin. A dermatologist and even beauty and skin care industry have always suggested going natural and organic for a better skin life. Hence, the industry also opted for going for herbal and organic products which will be light on the skin and also organic products are so natural that it goes with every skin type.

beauty, fashion organic product, organic beauty products, beauty products, Dr Blossom Kochhar, Beauty Source, SoulTree

Ragini Mehra, Founder, Beauty Source talks about the uprising of organic products in the Indian market. “The trend is not surprising; in fact, the demand for natural and organic beauty products in India is growing by the day, as much as internationally. In a market like India where herbal and ayurvedic hair and skin care has a legacy of usage, awareness and benefits of organic ingredients is quite high. The steady growth that the organic beauty products market is witnessing in recent years comes from the increasing consumer concerns regarding personal health and hygiene. Organic products renew the texture and health of your skin and hair without the use of any toxic chemicals, so no dangerous substances,” she said.

In the recent years, the organic industry has also dominated over chemical based skin care products, which is also a very major reason why the brands with chemical skin care products also shifted to organic beauty products. Now we have, organic creams, organic lip care products, organic haircolour, all because we all want to go mild on our skin and hair. Also, we Indians are so influenced by organic or herbal products that we want our food or festival colours also to be absolutely natural.

Guardian 20 spoke to Vishal Bhandari, Founder, SoulTree spoke about why organic products are better for the skin. “Whatever we apply on our bodies goes in our bodies and into our bloodstream. It’s a bit scary to think of all of the unlisted highly toxic skin care ingredients out there, but this is why you must choose something real and from nature. Quite simply, if something has been made using organic, natural produce you are guaranteed that it has the environment and sustainable practice at heart,” he said.

Indian beauty and skin care market is urging to use these natural products because now consumers are getting aware of the ingredients and natural method of making these products. As of now, organic beauty products are not popular in the Indian market. One of the main reasons is that organic products are on the expensive side and there are very few Indians who would prefer to spend thousands on beauty and skin care products. One of the main reasons of it being expensive is that its ingredients are organically farmed which include ingredients like Sodium chloride which is just sea salt, citric acid which is a compound found in lemons and other citrus fruits.

“Whatever we apply on our bodies goes in our bodies and into our bloodstream. It’s a bit scary to think of all of the unlisted highly toxic skin care ingredients out there, but this is why you must choose something real and from nature.”

Vishal Bhandari further said, “I think customers are becoming increasingly aware of the ingredients used in the products. Once they are assured of safe ingredients and ethical practices, and that they are getting the absolute best quality products for the most reasonable price, organic products will be even more popular.”

Dr Naresh Arora, Founder, Chase Aromatherapy Cosmetics reflects on about how organic products are very natural. “A number of cosmetics and skincare products available in India have been claimed to be organic in nature. However merely been natural does not categories their products as organic. Being a new concept, it requires minimum ten years of harvesting and producing the crop without the use of fertilisers and pesticides with the water quality & soil having no residual presence of chemical, heavy chemical & degrading bacteria. The organic crops have been tried and being produced at small pilot plant basic on mass scale basis, organic products with due standards, have not been possible to produce or claim,” he said.

Indian women do need natural or herbal products for their skin especially because of the tropical climate that the country goes through and also because of the many pollutants in the air.

Guardian 20 spoke to Shiv Singh Mann, Founder, Desert Splendour about why do Indian women need of organic products and she said, “Natural healing properties that you get from natural and organic products are the perfect gifts for yourself and your loved ones. Natural products repair and hydrate your skin cells. The quality organic products are the natural alternative to harsh chemical products that are prevalent in the market and a must have for anyone looking for soft & glowing skin and hair. The customers today are increasingly getting to know the goodness of going down the green path, and so, the demand for organic and natural products are rising by the day.”

On the site you can find facial lotion, lip balm, hand cream, body lotion, hand soap, cotton rounds, and cotton balls all for the same low, low price of $3. Sure, the variety is lacking, but rumor has it the website is only getting started, so the range is only going to get more expansive. Even better, most of the products — including food — are organic, gluten free, GMO-free, and rid of every harsh chemical in the book (see ya sulfates and phthalates).
Sounds too good to be true, right? We don’t disagree. The cheap price comes with some suspicion. Since it’s a private label, online-only brand it’s able to forego what the brand calls a BrandTax. Brandless explains this as “the hidden costs you pay for a national brand. We’ve been trained to believe these costs increase quality, but they rarely do.” And while the answer is a bit vague and raises even more questions (how can safe, simple products be made at such an absurdly low price?) we’re eager to find out more.
We’ve reached out to the brand for more information and will update this story as soon as we find out more. And we’ll be testing the products in the coming weeks to give you our unfiltered opinion on them.
