6 Tips That Will Help You Take The Best Food Photographs

Do you wonder how some people always manage to ace their food pictures and the ones you click, in contrast, look all dull and boring? Social media platforms are now overloaded with pictures of food that are beautiful, tasteful, enticing and sometime just plain gorgeous. Food photography is a skill that can be developed over a course time with the right knowledge and know-how. Because, if you are not tempted while looking at your own food pictures, then something must be wrong, right?

It is essential to note that some of the most appetizing photographs of food across social media haven’t been captured using a high-tech, expensive camera equipment. Thus, while DSLR cameras may give you a slight edge over others, getting an aesthetic food photograph needs more than just hi-end gadgetry. You humble smartphone can deliver good pictures too if you follow a few important points. To begin with, a well-captured food photograph possesses the capability to reflect the inherent taste of the food item that is clicked. That is how powerful the photograph must be.

6 simple, and important, things to keep in mind to get the best food photographs.

6 Tips That Will Help You Take The Best Food Photographs

1. Light will guide you:

For any photograph, whether it’s a portrait of a person, a landscape view or a food picture, adequate light is the most important aspect that must be taken into consideration. Natural light beats any other source of artificial lighting. It helps capture the nitty-gritties of the dish thus making it more appealing. Light must always come from the front or the side and make sure never to shoot in excess light as it defeats the purpose of the photograph. Avoid using the flash mode while clicking pictures of food, as the flash tends to create reflections giving the food a different orientation.

2. Angle: Depending on the food item, the most suitable angle helps enhance the photograph. While certain items will look best when shot directly from top, others will stand out when shot from the side, for instance, a multi-layered cake.  Some items like a burger will look best when shot at eye level. The angle is a subjective yet an essential characteristic in food photography. Try framing the shot using a few different angles before you zero-in on your preferred choice.

3. Pick a point of focus:

Here, we mean the ‘hero’ of the shot and the part you want people to pay attention to most. This is especially helpful when shooting in crowded or cluttered spaces. You should be able to pick the dish/platter and make that the hero of your photo. If one is shooting on a dining table, for example, make sure you include only the essential items on the table in the photograph. Otherwise, the attention is diverted away from the dish. Decide what is significant for the composition of the picture and what is not. Focus on what will make the photo look complete and avoid over crowding the shot.

4. Close up or not?

How ‘close’ do you want to see the food in your picture? A lot of people like taking only close-up shots of food and ingredients, and in most cases this works. Plated dishes, with a play of colours could look good in a wider view too. Try a few and see what does justice to the dish you are taking pictures of.

5. Interaction is the key:

Food photographs look a hundred times more appealing by adding a human element. It increases the level of engagement for the viewer, making it appear more real. Thus, while shooting, make it a point to hold the item in your hand, for instance. Compose the picture in a manner that incorporates some human element.

6. Props make all the difference:

Even the most palatable dish can look unappealing if not presented well. Thus, props make all the difference. It is of paramount importance that the correct cutlery, utensils, mats etc be used in food photography. Use clean plates and try and make use of white cutlery, which enables the food colors to stand out.

Ansel Adams once said, “You don’t take a photograph, you make it.”, and with the essential steps mentioned above, you are sure to make the best photograph possible. Happy clicking!

GST Effect: Tata Motors Announces Price Reduction For Its Commercial Vehicle Range

Having extended the GST benefits for its passenger vehicle customers, Tata Motors has now announced that it will be extending benefits under the new tax slab towards its commercial vehicle business as well. Following the roll out of GST, the company has decided to pass on the entire benefit to customers on the ex-showroom prices. Tata’s commercial vehicle range for cargo with a price reduction between 0.3 per cent and 4.21 per cent, while commercial vehicles for passenger transportation will see a reduction between 0.6 per cent and 8.2 per cent.

In a statement, Tata Motors – Head of Commercial Vehicle Business Unit, Girish Wagh said, “We wholeheartedly welcome the initiative by the Union Government for introducing GST thereby bringing in one uniform tax across the country. This will bring about significant gains to the country’s economy and advantages for the stakeholders while enhancing the ease of doing business. We are confident that the post-GST price reduction will enable the customers to bring down their cost of operations and in turn, boost demand.”

The reduction in prices should help Tata Motors’ efforts towards improving commercial vehicle sales. The company recorded positive numbers in June 2017 on a month-on-month basis. While sales were still 2 per cent lower when compared to June 2016, it was a sign of growth for the automaker having seen dwindling numbers back-to-back in the first half of this year. The improved sales were cited due to ramp up in the production of BS-IV vehicles and the overall production increase across different segments.

With respect to passenger vehicle sales, Tata Motors witnessed a drop of 5 per cent in June 2017, after what has been a largely positive year for the carmaker. The company cited uncertainty over the new GST norms as the main reason for its drop in sales. However, with an overall price reduction across its passenger vehicles, expect volumes to pick up once again. The Indian carmaker is also gearing up to introduce its much awaited Nexon subcompact SUV around the festive season.

The Autumn/Winter 2017 edition of  Amazon India Fashion Week(AIFW) might have ended, but it has left behind cues for several looks that one can go for. From going bold with graphic eyeliner to opting for slick hair pony tail, it’s time to experiment with your looks, say experts.

Aakriti Kochar, Beauty and Make-up Expert at Oriflame India, and Elizabeth Tapsall, Beauty and Make-up Expert of ColorBar, list some hair and make-up looks inspired from AIFW A/W 2017:

* Bold graphic eyeliner, Wendell Rodricks’s Arabic winged eyeliner or double flick extended eyeliner on the outer corners.

* Slick hair ponytail and loose strands can help you look effortless chic. This was seen in Pankaj and Nidhi’s show with graphic black eyeliner drawn on the outer contour of the eyes and smudged inwards to give a smokey effect. Though this look still looked more graphic than smokey. A blend of both seemed interesting and not too couture to carry otherwise.

* Tribal boho chic hair. Go for soft waves or curls with a few interesting colour strands to highlight the texture. These might be braids or extensions to make it look interesting.

* Have fun with cute, easy to do half buns. Goes well with almost anything you wear on the casual front. Be it your casual kurtas with denims, shorts, jumpers, boyfriend jeans and t shirt, white shirt and blue denim look. Team it up with bright lips.

* Look by Rina Dhaka with make-up paired with smokey eyes using browns and deep purples. Smokey eyes can never get out of fashion. The lips were bold, mostly reds and fuchsia.

* Namrata Joshipura’s vision was that of a global aesthetic. Her clothing easily translated across geographies and other artificial constructs such as age, race and point of view. The make-up paired was dark smokey eyes with the blusher in bronze. You can opt for this look for an evening party.

Believe it or not: ‘Butt glitter’ now exists, and it might be the next big summer thing!

Summer is almost here and people are all set to head to the beach and relax. With sexy swimsuit and fruity mocktails (or even cocktails for that matter), sandy beaches are the only thing we look forward to in the scorching heat of summers. So, to make it even better, few fashion enthusiasts have added glitz and glam to the sandy experience at the beach.

Taking body glitter trend to a whole new level, sparkle buffs have started a bizarre trend of wearing glittery on their butt! Yes, you read it right. Fashion enthusiasts have given a shimmery twist to the phrase ‘sandy-butt’ and are smearing glitters on their bottoms. And, as wacky as this may sound, this could certainly be the next big summer thing, as it has already started attracting a great fan-base on Instagram.

So, after glittery eyes, lips and face, apparently it’s time to up your game and glitter your derrière.

Self-proclaimed ‘glitter creature’ — artist and photographer Mia Kennington who is also part of a glitter cult called ‘The Gypsy Shrine’ can be attributed to the quirky trend. The UK-based glitter squad who travel around the world and spread their glitter-love by smearing colourful shimmers on customers at various events, festivals, pop-up shops, and parties have started the campaign on Instagram. The stunning group recently added “glitter-butts” to its services after a trip to the Beyond Sahara festival in Morocco.

According to a report by the Cosmopolitan, Kennington elaborated how the crazy idea dawned on her. “It was a hectic day because we were glittering up everybody and also had to get content for our website. So [artist Sophia Moreno and I] just had to spark off ideas in a span of, like, 20 minutes. We were in bikinis and were getting sand all over our butts anyway, so we were like, ‘Well, what if we enhance this?’ So we just did loads and loads of glitter.”

And for those who can’t invite them to their parties or get it done by these experts, they have even shared various tutorials as to how one can get ‘mermaid tails’ or ‘rainbow booty’.

Kriti Sanon gives serious vacation goals with her summer style for a magazine cover

Kriti Sanon has been making the right moves — not only in the film industry but in the fashion circuit as well! The actress who was recently seen walking the ramp for designer duo Akriti & Sukriti is a self confessed fashion enthusiast and she “loves to dress up for special occasions”.

The 26-year-old recently made a scorching debut for the cover page of Vogue magazine and her style statement has got people bright eyed and bushy tailed. Not only did she look like a true diva, we think her fashion sense also reached a new height. It’s just what one would flaunt on a dream vacation.

Pepped up with designer ensembles from Kalita, Tarun Tahiliani, En Inde, Monies, Dana Levy, she looked enchanting! What’s interesting is that her outfits, accessories and jewellery had a African touch to it. Sharing the picture on Instagram, she wrote, “Vogue April 2017 issue! My first- had to be special!”

The leggy lass looked ravishing in a two-piece from Kalita complemented with Tarun Tahiliani’s floral long-line jacket. Styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania, she accessorised it with a gold plated necklace from En Inde and huge round earrings.

Hair and makeup artist Bianca Hartkopf gave her a glossy bronze touch and styled her tresses beautifully with waves at the end. We think it went perfectly well with the outfit.
