5 Effective Home Remedies to Get Rid of Dandruff

5 Effective Home Remedies to Get Rid of Dandruff

Dry skin, yeast infection, unhealthy diet, or any other skin-related ailments, dandruff is caused due to several reasons but the tricky part is that it can be incredibly difficult to treat. To do away with the white flakes, here are some effective home remedies

. Manoj Khanna, owner of Enhance Clinic, shares some common ingredients and substances you use at home that can save the day.

1. Baking soda:

Wet your hair and then rub a handful of baking soda, massaging it into the scalp. Rinse thoroughly, using a mild shampoo. Baking soda will counter the growth of overactive fungi and leave you with a cleaner mane.

2. Aspirin: What makes this work? A special substance called salicylic acid that also forms an essential ingredient in a host of medicated anti-dandruff shampoos. For freedom from dandruff, crush two aspirin tablets to a fine powder and add it your shampoo. Apply this solution and leave it for a minute or two and then rinse thoroughly.

3. Mouthwash:

Surprised? Don’t be because it really works. Try mouthwash for that dash of freshness and much needed respite from dandruff. First, wash your hair with regular shampoo and then give it a final rinse with an alcohol-based mouthwash. Its anti-fungal properties will inhibit the growth of dandruff-producing yeast and leave you with shiny hair. Don’t forget to use a conditioner.

4. Salt: The abrasive quality of salt can work wonders

. Just sprinkle some salt directly on to your scalp. Then, massage it using circular motions like you would with a scrub. This will cleanse the scalp and leave it spic and span, ready to be shampooed as usual.

5. Garlic: Barring the pungent smell, this is one of the best ways to beat dandruff. Its potent anti-fungal properties can fight dandruff like nothing else. To cut the odour, you can mix crushed garlic with honey. Apply this paste liberally on to the scalp before shampooing.

Home Remedies for Chapped Lips: How to Get Soft, Red & Gorgeous Lips

Home Remedies for Chapped Lips: How to Get Soft, Red & Gorgeous Lips

Just like a bad haircut, flaky or dark lips can make or break your look. They’re seemingly obvious and can’t be concealed, no matter how hard you try; 20 dollar lipsticks, store-bought lip balms, you can try them all but eventually the real deal will give way. There could be many reasons why your lips could transition to being dull and dark: too much caffeine, UV rays, unexpected allergies, smoking, caffeine and hormonal imbalances.  Once you identify the lifestyle change, you can work on treating your lips, armed with a handful of kitchen ingredients and consistency. Every woman dreams of pink or ruby-red, healthy and plump lips and today we’re going to demonstrate how you can get those without having to spend large amounts of your hard-earned cash.

How to treat chapped lips

When you’ve got chapped, flaky and dry lips, your first instinct would be to grab your lip balm and rub it over your lips in one quick motion. Would we be wrong in saying that sometimes your lips might feel more dry after a few minutes? We may have found you an easier and more long-term solution that will also help you escape this viscous circle.

1. Shea butter, Vaseline, almond oil, coconut oil or cocoa butter are going to be your new best friends. Apply one of any of them through the day and you’ll find your lips to be much softer and healthier than before.

2. Aloe vera has always been pegged as one of India’s best beauty secrets

and you know what, it’ll deliver. Apply some aloe vera gel twice a day and in a few days you’ll see your lips getting softer.

3. Vitamin E tablets can work as a great remedy and it doesn’t just help with lips but even your skin and hair in general. Vitamin E capsules are easily available in the market. All you need to do is break the capsules and use the liquid on your lips twice a day, for a few days till your lips are hydrated and in the pink of health.

4. Make your own balm – This might be easier said than done but if none of the store-bought balms suit you, it may be your best alternative. All you need is 2 tablespoons extra virgin coconut oil, half a tablespoon of shea butter, 1 tablespoon grated beeswax, 10 drops of vitamin E oil and 10 drops of an essential oil.

Method: Place the coconut oil, shea butter and bees wax in a glass dish or mason jar and microwave it for a few seconds till it melts completely. Now, let it cool. Then, mix in the remaining ingredients and let it set. (recipe from bloglovin.com)

Scrub, Scrub & Exfoliate: How to Lighten Dark Lips

Dark lips are something you cannot hide or conceal and once noticed are a real turn off.

1. Make a paste from turmeric powder

and milk, leave it on for about two to three minutes and wash it off. Then, apply some lip balm and leave be.

2. Lemon juice is known for its bleaching properties and can work wonders on dark lips. So make a mix of lemon juice, sugar and scrub your lips every alternate day with this. Lemon juice is highly and if you apply too much of it, it can dry out your lips. If you feel that happening to you, then add some glycerin or honey to the mix.

3. Grab some rose water, honey and saffron (if possible). If you don’t have rose water you can take some rose petals, soak them in water for an hour and make a paste out of it. Then, add some honey to it and a few saffron threads. Apply this mix twice a day till your lips starts to regain colour.

How to Get Ruby Red Lips

Who doesn’t love red lips? And they look even better when they’re naturally red.

1. Increase your intake of red fruits like pomegranate, beetroot and carrots. They contain many essential vitamins and minerals and help increase blood circulation. You can also use beetroot paste or carrot pulp (which is the leftover part when you juice carrots) on your lips. It’ll help improve any dark spots or discolouration and make them look healthy and red. You can also take beetroot juice, mix it with lemon and sugar and exfoliate your lips with it.

2. Use naturally red fruits and rub them over your lips till some of the colour rubs off. Then, quickly apply some lip balm over it and there, that should do it.

3. Now that we’ve established that fruits are the best way to bring some colour to your lips, you can make your very own fruit-inspired lip balm. Mash some strawberries and mix it with petroleum jelly. Apply this a few times a day to get soft, red and luscious lips.

4. The ultimate exfoliator: Grab some beetroot and carrots, chop them up and throw them in a blender. Add some drops of water to this and puree till it’s a fine mix. Now, add 2 tablespoon of honey and 2 tablespoons of olive oil to it. Apply this once in the morning and then at night, leave it overnight. (Credits: beautytips4her.com)

10 Home Remedies for Glowing Skin

10 Home Remedies for Glowing Skin

Come autumn and most people I know start to stock up their creams, moisturisers and other skin nourishing products. During this time of the year, the skin starts to feel stretched and leathery, especially for those people who have dry skin. And for others who have been neglecting a proper skin care regime also notice patchy and discoloured, dull looking skin. Coming to people with oily and combination skin types, the skin starts to look better, more porcelain and glowing, but remember even these skin types will feel a tightening and stretching of the skin and will require not just moisturising but nourishing too.

So what’s the difference between moisturising and nourishing you’d ask? The simplest way to explain it to you would be comparing a dehydrated powdered soup available in packets as against a fresh, wholesome, home-made soup. You can never replace the goodness of pure fresh ingredients and products whether it is on your skin and hair or something you take internally.

So what are these winter skin nourishers that give you the goodness of natural ingredients? Do they just moisturise the skin or do they nourish and pamper it too? Most certainly the answer is in the affirmative. Let’s have a look at some of nature’s wonderful skin nourishers and see how you can use them to improve, soften, nourish and pamper your skin.

Natural Skin Nourishers

5 Amazing Home Remedies for Dry Hair

5 Amazing Home Remedies for Dry Hair

Dry, unmanageable and unconditioned hair

is not a pretty sight and can lead to a lot of problems. Not only does this hair type lack lustre and shine, but is also prone to hair fall issues

. I have come across many people, both men and women, who use everything and just about anything to try and tame their hair

in an effort to make them shiny, soft and manageable. If only it was that simple!

There is no doubt whatsoever that dry hair is genetic, but it could also be the result of unhealthy lifestyle habits, which include food and drinks, sleeping hours, stress levels and exercise routine, and above all, your hair care regime. And by this, I do not mean just shampooing your hair.

Hair care means taking care of your hair right from shampooing and conditioning to oiling it regularly, using the right oil, natural hair masks, hair nourishers, tonics and also following a healthy diet. The hair care regime has to be a part of your weekly, if not bi weekly, routine.

Here are some home remedies to take care of dry hair –

1. Regular Oiling

I would suggest that those with dry hair problem should oil their hair at least twice a week and leave it on for at least two hours. Not only does it help condition the hair but provides nourishment as well, making it soft and promoting hair growth. A good quality Mahabhringraj or Brahmi Amla oil is recommended. Or else a good quality sesame seed oil mixed with equal quantities of almond and castor oil. Use turban therapy to allow the oil to seep into the roots.

2. Avocado Hair Mask

You can use the following natural hair mask after oiling your hair, which will nourish it –

1 mashed avocado

2tsp honey

2tsp triphala powder

2 eggs, beaten

Method: Mix all the ingredients well and apply all over your hair. Cover with a shower cap for at least 45 minutes. Wash with a mild herbal shampoo.

3. Rose Hair Mask

Rose petals are known for their incredible properties for both skin and hair. Combine them with two other power ingredients – almond oil and eggs, and they can work wonders. Use –

2 eggs, beaten

1/2 cup fresh rose petal paste

4 tsp almond oil

Method: Mix all the ingredients together and apply all over the hair and scalp and leave in for about 45 minutes. Wash with a mild shampoo.

4. Natural Hair Rinse

If you are among those who don’t have the time for carrying out elaborate hair care regimes, why not make some natural hair rinses to use after shampooing and conditioning? Here’s how –

Take 200ml distilled water or spring water and add 2 tsp honey. Use this as an after shampoo rinse.

You can also boil 10 Marigold flowers in 1 litre of water. Let this steep for 1 hour and add 1 tsp olive oil. Strain and use as an after shampoo rinse for your hair. Not only will your hair feel softer but more manageable as well.

5. Flowery and Fruity Hair Pack

Flower and fruit extracts have always had a special place in my treasure trove of beauty recipes, both for the skin and hair. This recipe is a real treat. I use it regularly and also have shared it with some of my Bollywood clients whose hair goes through a lot of turmoil and stress with the constant drying and hairstyling.

How to Remove Stretch Marks: 7 Effective Natural Remedies

Most women suffer from stretch marks usually after pregnancy, but that’s not the only cause for it. Men too have stretch marks and so do women who are not pregnant. Stretch marks occur due to a sudden weight gain or weight loss.

There are various natural products that can help reduce stretch marks and lighten them if not make them disappear completely. However, it requires a regular skin care programme and strict discipline.

Here are a few effective home remedies to reduce stretch marks –

Aloe vera is a plant that helps regenerate skin tissue and as such it has miraculous healing properties. Take the fresh gel from the leaf and massage onto the area with stretch marks and leave on for 20-30 minutes. Do it daily and wash off with tepid water.

Home Remedies for Skin-Care in Monsoon

Home Remedies for Skin-Care in Monsoon

Monsoons have finally hit us with Mumbai witnessing heavy rainfall and Delhi preparing to welcome the rains. The temperatures usually take a dip with the onset of monsoon, but this time around the mercury levels have been on the higher side. After a long spell of the heat wave, we look forward to the relief of the much-awaited monsoons, the intoxicating fragrance of rain on the parched earth, the lush green freshly bathed trees and, of course, the coolness of the breeze. However, like every other season, monsoon has its share of skin problems

.

The monsoon spells high humidity levels and that can definitely lead to nightmares, especially for those of you who suffer from intensively oily and acne prone skin

. Keep the skin oil free and squeaky-clean with this antiseptic tonic –

A cup of fuller’s earth
Mixed with enough rose water to make a smooth paste
1 tsp of powdered camphor

Keep this paste in the fridge in an air-tight jar and use a teaspoon of this mixture on the face several times a day. This will reduce oiliness and give your skin a clean feel.

I am quite confident that all those of you with excessively dry skin may feel slightly better as humidity hydrates the skin and gives it a natural glow. However, to keep that skin glowing, make a mixture of –

A glass of rain water
Mix a tsp of honey

Mix both together and apply on your skin. This honey water let the skin absorb and soak up all its goodness. Wash the skin with cold water after 30 minutes.

Honey

If your skin breaks out into pimples every now and then, especially during the rains, make the following paste and apply only on the pimples –

2 tsp fuller’s earth
2 drops clove oil
1 tsp sandalwood powder
1 tsp finely ground neem paste

Mix to a thick paste and apply on the pimples. Let it dry completely. This can be used daily. Besides this, the easiest trick is to drink lots of water

, at least 10 glasses daily. This will help flush out your toxins and lend a natural radiance to the skin.

For a cleansing face wash for particularly oily skin make the following –

2 tsp fuller’s earth
2 tsp sandalwood powder
10 ground basil leaves
Rose water

Mix to a paste and wash your face with this. Not only will your skin feel cleaner but it’ll also glow.

Glowing skin

Acne is common problem during the monsoon and can be very irritating. To get rid of pimple problems make the following pack –

2 tsp fuller’s earth
A pinch of camphor
2 drops of clove oil

Mix this with rose water and apply on the pimples. Let dry and wash off with fridge cold water. Be careful when using clove oil as even a little extra quantity will tend to burn the skin.

rose water

As the weather shifts from hot and sweaty to becoming humid, you need to make small changes in your beauty routine to take care of your skin. Keep these home-remedies handy and you will be able to enjoy beautiful looking skin throughout the season.

Go bitter in the rains

For Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD)

PCOD is a health condition that affects one in every 10 women. PCOS is an aftermath of a hormonal imbalance in women wherein testosterone levels shoot up in the body causing an array of symptomatic reactions. A woman with PCOS is prone to gain weight, pelvic pain, acne, depression and irregular menstrual cycles. In some cases, women with PCOD may even face challenges in conceiving. But with proper treatment, diet and exercise schedule, PCOD is curable.

The most simple and effective treatment for PCOD is Ayurveda. You can rely on Aloe Vera pulp with manjistha (rubia cordifolia) capsule. This helps in purifying blood and gradually restores the health of uterus which results in regular, healthy periods.

For menorrhagia (Heavy Bleeding)

Menorrhagia is defined as menstruation at regular intervals but with excessive flow and duration. This is one of the most common problems in women. Some women have also reported heavy bleeding for 6 to 7 days during periods leading to weakness and other health issues. According to Vaidya Pravin Hirpara, niranjan phal (China Fruit) is best and effective medicine for Menorrhagia.

You can soak Niranjan Phal in water for 1.5 to two hours till the time fruit swells to the size of a lemon. Crush and squeeze the pulp into the water. Add some sugar and drink it. This effectively controls menstrual bleeding.

For foul menstrual blood odour

Many women find menstruation odour unpleasant during and after their periods. You may experience this situation despite maintaining hygiene. A normal vaginal discharge doesn’t have any smell. But a foul-smelling vaginal discharge is a distinctive point between a normal and abnormal menstrual period. The foul odour during menstruation is not normal, thus should be considered a serious problem. It can be the result of infection in the vagina or in the cervix. This foul smell is called aartdushti in Ayurveda and can be treated with manjishta which helps in blood purification.

For Leukorrhea (White Discharge)

A white or yellow sticky discharge from the vagina or uterine cavity is referred to as Leukorrhea. This often gets increased at the time of ovulation or before a menstrual period. This situation is also stimulated by sexual excitement, whether or not coitus takes place. Excessive discharge, however, may indicate an abnormal condition. A yellow or creamy white discharge, especially if it is thick, often contains pus and provides evidence of an infection. Eating one or two bananas a day can solve this problem easily.
